What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation refers to the darkening of patches of skin compared to the surrounding areas. It occurs when there is an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, in certain areas of the skin. The most common type of hyperpigmentation is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). PIH occurs after the skin has been damaged by sun exposure, acne, or other injuries. The damaged skin cells produce more melanin to repair themselves. This can lead to dark spots or patches that fade over time.

Sun exposure

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is a common cause of hyperpigmentation. It triggers the production of melanin as a defense mechanism to protect the skin from further damage. Prolonged or excessive sun exposure can lead to the formation of sunspots, freckles, and overall uneven skin tone.

Hormonal changes and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Conditions such as melasma, commonly known as "pregnancy mask," can occur during pregnancy or when taking hormonal contraceptives. It causes dark patches on the face, especially the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip. Post-inflammation is the type of hyperpigmentation that occurs after an injury, inflammation, or skin trauma, such as acne, burns, cuts, or even aggressive skin treatments. The skin produces excess melanin during the healing process, resulting in dark spots or patches.

Genetic and Age-related factors

Some individuals are genetically predisposed to developing hyperpigmentation. Certain ethnicities, such as those with darker skin tones, are more prone to conditions like melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The accumulation of sun damage over time, decreased skin cell turnover, and hormonal changes can contribute to the development of age spots and an uneven complexion.

Certain skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, and lichen planus, can cause hyperpigmentation as a result of inflammation and disruption of normal skin pigmentation. It’s important to note that hyperpigmentation can vary in severity and treatment options, and it's always advisable to consult with a dermatologist or healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.

Hyperpigmentation Laser Treatment

Energize Aesthetics provides hyper-pigmentation laser treatments and much more, depending on the underlying cause and the severity of the condition. Laser treatment is a popular and effective option for addressing hyperpigmentation. It utilizes laser technology to target and break down excess melanin in the skin, leading to a reduction in pigmentation and an overall improvement in skin tone. Laser devices emit specific wavelengths of light that are absorbed by the melanin in the skin. The absorbed energy heats up the melanin-containing cells (melanocytes) responsible for producing excessive pigment. This heat energy causes the targeted cells to break down, allowing the body's natural healing processes to gradually remove the damaged cells and reduce pigmentation.

Types of lasers

Different types of lasers can be used for hyperpigmentation treatment, including Q-switched lasers, fractional lasers, and intense pulsed light (IPL) devices. Q-switched lasers emit short, high-energy pulses of light that specifically target melanin, making them effective for treating various forms of pigmentation, including sunspots and freckles. Fractional lasers create microscopic channels in the skin, stimulating collagen production and promoting the replacement of damaged pigmented cells. IPL devices use broad-spectrum light to target pigmented areas and improve overall skin tone.

Treatment process

At Energize Aesthetics, before undergoing hyperpigmentation laser treatment, a consultation with a dermatologist or laser specialist is typically conducted to assess your skin condition and determine the most suitable laser device and settings for your specific needs. During the treatment session, the laser is carefully applied to the targeted areas. The procedure may cause a mild sensation of warmth or slight discomfort, which can be managed with topical anesthetics or cooling techniques.

Recovery and results

Hyperpigmentation laser treatment typically requires minimal downtime. After the procedure, you may experience some temporary redness, swelling, or mild skin sensitivity, which usually subsides within a few days. It's essential to follow post-treatment care instructions provided by your healthcare professional, such as avoiding sun exposure and using sunscreen. The results of laser treatment for hyperpigmentation are not immediate and may require multiple sessions for optimal outcomes. Over time, as the skin heals and new collagen is produced, you should notice a gradual lightening of pigmented areas and an improvement in overall skin tone and texture.
